I have a few general questions. I'm a second year chemistry major. I don't particularly have a passion for it. I want to
minor in another subject area. I'm worried that I may have taken too many courses outside of my major.
First year, i had my compulsory science courses with psych and business admin and this year i have geo and a humanity course. If i minor in another subject area, say humanities, will i use the courses i've taken(geo, business admin) as general education credits still?

normal, adj. & n. [nawr-muhl, nôr'məl]
-The history of this word can be traced back to Latin norma 'carpenter's square.' Because this was used to build uniformly, the carpenter's square took on the more abstract meaning of 'a rule or pattern.' It was under this definition that Late Latin developed normalis 'in conformity with a rule, made according to the [carpenter's] square, normal.' Around the 15th century, English adopted this as normal, a learned word for 'typical, common.' Though scholars are not certain where the original Latin norma comes from, some theorize that it was borrowed from Greek gnomon 'carpenter's square' and possibly related to the prehistoric Indo-European root gno- 'to know.'

Hello,
I translated an Jun related article about the coming of the 10th year anniversary. This interview is part of a series of interviews that the Poporo magazine is doing. They were interviewing all the boys. Jun's was the 4th one to be done. I thought others might like to read it. Also, please note that this is the first time I have translated anything and there might be mistakes. Please enjoy. :) If this is not allowed on this community, please fill free to remove.

Afternoon, folks! Happy Thursday the 12th and Friday the 13th for those of you have have slipped into the new day - I figure I'm safe as long as at least one US state is still Thursday!

Today's word is:

Cordiform [kor-dih-form]
adjective

Defininition
Heart-shaped. Simple enough!

Etymology
From Latin cordi, heart + formus, taking the shape of.

Usage
Jake had totally forgotten that it was his anniversary, and in an act regularly seen in sitcoms (along with one guy dating two girls at the same time at the dance and failing miserably, and the husband losing his wedding ring and spend more effort hiding it than finding it) he raced around town looking for something vaguely cordiform to give his girlfriend. It was going so well, too, until she reminded him that their anniversary was the day before.

Remember, Montreal! I'm going to be at Expozine this weekend! You should come.

I realized today that the comic I was working on was going to take longer than I thought, so I made these up real quick before I take off for Montreal! You go to one of these things, and it's four days gone like a flash. Not that anyone checks the internet on the weekend, but still. In any case, I like the Kiss elves.

bear
bear, n. [bair, bâr]
-The name for a big, furry animal that comes in black, brown, white, and a few colors in between, the modern English word bear comes from a Germanic source. Middle English bere, beran was developed from Old English bera 'bear,' which was first recorded prior to 900 CE. Old English bear - along with Old High German bero, Middle Dutch bere, and Old Norse björn - sprung from Proto-Germanic beron 'the brown one' from the prehistoric Indo-European root bher-. Interestingly, Greek arktos and Latin ursus, both meaning 'bear,' are descended from another prehistoric Indo-European root: rtko- 'bear.' This is very likely the root that English would have adopted for the name of the animal, but many hunting cultures in northern Europe believed that calling a wild animal by name was bad luck, so they replaced the official name (in their various languages) with one more descriptive. In many cases, including English, this descriptive name related to color dietary habits. Take, for example, the translations of words for bear in Irish, 'the good calf,' Welsh 'honey-pig,' Lithuanian 'the licker,' and Russian 'honey-knower.' Another surprising fact is that in Old and Middle English, the word for bear, bera '(lit.) brown animal,' was also used to name the beaver.

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Nothing significant to report since the last time.

- Cats: The rascals are fine, "helping" me write by forming piles on my desk chair and refusing to move. Madame Persikat is also well, but still lives outside on my balcony. Hopefully the others will get used to her before the real cold starts.

- NaNo/Writing: I'm catching up. The two short stories that popped up in my head are finished, and perhaps now the Muse will let me focus on my novel. Because the Mews won't. *sigh* See icon.

- House-hunting: Apparently, my mother knows several people in the area, because she grew up here and went to school here, and this includes owners of houses that are about to get into the market. And one of them is on the same block with my current building, but has a little garden and is very close to my idea of a dream house. Fingers crossed that I'll soon get some good news here.

Off to continue with my NaNo now. Just another 300 words for today...

incarcerate, v. [in-kahr-suh-reyt, ĭn-kär-sə-rāt]
-Meaning 'to put [something] in prison,' incarcerate was brought into English around 1550 CE as a learned word from Medieval Latin incarcerare, of the same meaning. This Medieval Latin term is a compound verb formed from the Latin prefix in- 'in, within' and root carcer 'a prison, an enclosed space.' Scholars are not sure exactly where carcer comes from, as few related words have yet to be found in other languages.
